Tropic interactions in pampean shallow lakes: evaluation of silverside predatory effects in mesocosm experiments

چکیده
Planktivorous fish directly suppress some prey species and indirectly affect species that interact with these prey (HRBACEK 1962, BROOKS & DODSON 1965, HALL et al. 1970, DRENNER et al. 1986). Visually feeding zooplanktivorous fish are size-selective predators, directly suppressing large zooplankton, and indirectly temporarily enhancing small zooplankton and phytoplankton (HURLBERT & MULLA 1981, DRENNER et al. 1990). The intensity of the direct and indirect effects of planktivores is dependent on fish density (THRELKELD 1988). Planktivorous fish are sometimes considered to promote eutrophication process in lakes (QUIRÓS 1998). Its trophic effects sometimes cascade through zooplankton to the base of the food web, promoting temporary algal growth by means of the suppression of large herbivorous cladocerans (CARPENTER et al. 1985). The young pampean silversides (Odontesthes bonariensis), dominant species in pampean shallow lakes, are visual zooplanktivore feeders. Moreover, pampean silverside abundance was shown to be indirectly related to phytoplankton biomass, after nutrient effects have been taken into account (QUIRÓS 1995). To evaluate the direct and indirect effects of this planktivore, two outdoor mesocosm experiments were conducted, simulating average conditions of salinity, nutrient status and plankton in the pelagic zone of a typical pampean shallow lake.

متن کاملArtificial neural networks and remote sensing in the analysis of the highly variable Pampean shallow lakes.
Suspended organic and inorganic particles, resulting from the interactions among biological, physical, and chemical variables, modify the optical properties of water bodies and condition the trophic chain. The analysis of their optic properties through the spectral signatures obtained from satellite images allows us to infer the trophic state of the shallow lakes and generate a real time tool f...
متن کاملEffects of water bugs on crustacean zooplankton in a shallow littoral zone
This is an Open distribution, Abstract – Interactions within the food chain are essential to ecosystem ecology. At the same time, very little is known of the trophic relationships between Heteroptera and zooplankton. The aim of this study was to examine the community structure of water bugs in the littoral zone of shallow lakes and their impact on crustacean zooplankton communities. A study on ...
متن کاملEffects of Stocking Adult Largemouth Bass to Enhance Fisheries Recovery in Pascagoula River Floodplain Lakes Impacted by Hurricane Katrina
Following Hurricane Katrina in 2005, hypoxia-induced fish kills occurred throughout the Pascagoula River Basin in southeast Mississippi. We evaluated the effect of stocking adult Florida largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides floridanus; 200–356 mm total length) into Pascagoula River floodplain lakes to enhance fisheries recovery. We stocked 37 fish/ha into five randomly-chosen lakes in Decembe...
متن کاملEffects of wind wave turbulence on the phytoplankton community composition in large, shallow Lake Taihu.
Wind waves are responsible for some of the spatio-temporal gradients observed in the biotic and abiotic variables in large shallow lakes. However, their effects on the phytoplankton community composition are still largely unexplored especially in freshwater systems such as lakes. In this paper, using field observations and mesocosm bioassay experiments, we investigated the impact of turbulence ...
